VAE were engaged by Leighs Construction to deliver the new state of the art students meeting and events building at the University of Canterbury.

The new 3,500m2 two-storey purpose-built student association building provides the student body with facilities including a Performance Theatre, Function Centre, Social Spaces, Club Spaces, Bars, UCSA office and external entertainment areas including an amphitheatre and outdoor kitchen.

Key Achievements

  • VAE were awarded the project on a construct only basis, however due to inherent problems with the design that was issued for construction the functionality of the building would have been compromised (including architectural & acoustic) this led to VAE taking on a vast amount of design work in order to ensure a fully functioning building solution.
  • The team managed to produce the above positive result whilst having a significant lack of full design control which meant many challenges including time delays with approvals etc.
  • Due to documents not being coordinated between structure, architecture and services prior to project commencement VAE took on full design level co- ordination. VAE have received praise from the client, stating that the project would not have been successful without VAE’s input.
